The
Dublin Rally
Join us with or without your boat in Dublin in 2012.
This
is just the second year that its possible for boats to come to Dublin via the
Royal Canal since its closure in 1960. We welcome all
who make the trip from the Erne, the Shannon, the Barrow, the Royal and the
Grand Canal in addition to our coastal visitors..
Some of you who come in via one canal may return via
the other. If you do this, you're taking up our
Green & Silver Challenge - see
here for more details.
If you're thinking of joining the rally, contact
Peter Johnson on 087 2301494 or
Mick Kinahan on 086 8150483 or
contact the Dublin Branch
Rally committee by clicking here.
See Terms & Conditions below.
Download the
Main Rally Entry form
and return
to the address on the form.
We've prepared a guide for those tackling the Royal Canal for the first
time - see Tips on Travelling the Royal Canal -
note in particular the dates on which the Spencer Dock railway bridge will be
lifted.
All dates below are provisional and subject to change
- April 2012: Note that the Summit Level
of the Royal Canal is closed (water levels too low)

 Film Double Bill
-
Doors open 19:00, Film show starts 20:00
Ruth Delany will present a film-show on the Voyager of the Hark.
Ruth was one of the crew of six, and the film, shot by Douglas
Heard, documents Hark's voyage up
the Royal Canal 1955 - the last boat to travel the canal before its
reopening in 2010. Some of this footage featured in the 2011 airing of
Waterways with the Rambler and the voyage itself was written up in the book
"Ireland's Royal Canal".
The footage is approx 40 minutes.
Ian Bath will also present a
short film, shot in the '70s showing the state of the Royal Canal at that
time, pre-restoration.
Those of you, who've read "Ireland's Royal Canal", may already have seen
some "before" and "after" photos. This promises to me most
interesting, particularly to those of you who are planning or have completed
a journey on the Royal canal.
The footage is approx 15 minutes.

Slight change of plans.
Due to ongoing works in Spencer Dock access through the sea-lock will not be

upstream to above Lock 1.
Plan now is to meet up at Lock 1/Charleville Mall at
11.00 AM and clear as much rubbish as possible from within and
above the lock.
BRING WORKGLOVES...!!!

We have a cleaning gig with a group of Transition Year canoeists from
Ballyfermot Youth Svcs between Locks 7 and 8 next Tuesday from 10 to 3, so
it might be nice if we could get it out there for that. This opportunity
arose out of the Canal Info Evening at Suir Rd last week and given the
impending passage of boats into the Rally, the fact that this group actually
take stuff out of the water, rather than just from the banks (suits their
canoeing activities) and that we might get a nice pic for the next IWN,
anyone available to drop by on the day would be well appreciated ...!
